Little man's 2nd birthday party was last weekend...He is a "MELMO" fanatic! We had lots of Elmo decor but I found the cutest Cookie Monster cupcake idea on Pinterest so I had to make them - with my own little twist :) My brother decided to make some Elmo cupcakes too...They all turned out so cute!

And...I think he liked them :)

This is from a very talented photographer and it had to of taken a lot of nerve to share. So powerful...a bit heart breaking...and so real for so many - not just for photographers, but for others in creative fields and small business owners. Times are tough. It's hard trying to make a living doing what you love and have put so much into - it's scary and stressful and heartbreaking at times...But this is what I love, something I feel I have a talent for, and definitely have a lot of passion for. I have put in a lot of work to developing as a photographer - I am constantly expanding my knowledge, educating myself, and practicing - always striving to provide the best product to my clients. I have invested so much - and giving up just isn't an option even when times are really tough. And not everyone in my life understands. It's okay.

There is nothing I'd rather have in this world than beautiful photos of my family to cherish, to cover my walls, to help me remember. And there is nothing in this world I would rather do than provide beautiful photos to other families to cherish, to cover their walls, to help them remember their precious newborn baby who is so little for only a little while, their toddler - then child - then teenager who is growing up so fast and becoming more of their own person every day, their high school senior as they end one chapter and begin another.

Custom portrait photography is an investment. I get that you have a budget too, I do try to keep my prices reasonable while having hope that I can make it by financially as a photographer without a second source of income...someday. I put a lot of time and effort into each session and every photo that I edit. I promise to do everything in my power to make it worth it - to create the most beautiful photos that I possibly can for you to cherish for years to come, to decorate your walls with, to help you remember when...

Well, I made it through the holidays and managed to get everyone their photos in time for Christmas! My almost two year-old is loving all his new toys and can't get enough play time in! It was so fun watching him this year - each gift he unwrapped was his favorite :) He was nothing short of adorable and such a joy (as usual)!! Now, it's back to work for me and I have much to catch up on (including the blog)!

My little man is 18 months old already! He is such a joy, so full of personality, intelligent, ALL boy...and certainly a challenge! I drug my sweet boy and the hubby to a local nature park with hopes of actually getting a "real" session in or close to it... Usually I attempt to take photos of him by myself which just does not work...very well anyway. He is, of course, the most difficult child for me to photograph :) I have to say I LOVE these photos of him that show off his big personality, his gorgeous blue eyes, and golden hair with perfect curls. I certainly love him more that I could ever explain, he is my world and has brought more joy to my life that I could have ever imagined and he amazes me more every day! A big thanks to the wonderful hubby for assisting a bit - particularly with the big smiles! Love you both so much! XOXO

Focus of the Week - Depth of Field

Depth of field. The distance that is sharp beyond and in front of the focus point at a given f-stop.

My favorite portraits have a shallow depth of field; I love a blurry foreground and background with the point of focus perfectly sharp to emphasize the subject. I always try to select the largest aperture or smallest f/value possible to achieve a shallow depth of field.

I love this wedding portrait with the beautiful blurry background emphasizing these lovely newlyweds. The shallow depth of field was created using an f-stop of f/2.8.

I love this photo with the beautiful blurry foreground framing the subjects. To acheive this, I shot through vines to frame the subjects at an f-stop of f/2.8 to create a shallow depth of field.

When photographing couples I love to focus in on one with the other out of focus. In the photo below the bride is my point of focus, the groom is out of focus in the foreground and there is a beautiful blurry background. The shallow depth of field was created using an f-stop of f/2.

Focus of the Week - Taking Photographs in Natural Light

I am a natural light photographer with the exception of those occasional times when I must shoot with artifical light such as during weddings in the dark when I simply have no other choice. I certainly do not have anything against artificial light; I just feel like natural light suits my style of photography better. I believe that lighting is the most important aspect of my photos, or any photo for that matter. Lighting can absolutely make a photo beautiful or break a photo completely. So, here are some natural light basics that I live by.

I do my best to shoot early or late in the day when the sun is low in the sky - this is referred to as "sweet light.". The photos below are favorites because of the gorgeous light captured late in the day.

I try to avoid shooting in the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky which can cause harsh shadows, squinting and glare; although as a wedding photographer, I cannot always avoid shooting in the middle of the day.

If I must shoot in the middle of the day, first I hope for an overcast sky. An overcast sky acts as a very large natural diffuser creating beautiful, soft, and balanced light for portrait photography. Fortunately and unfortunately overcast skies are extremely common here in Portland, OR; I could certainly handle a few more days of sunshine :)

When I must shoot mid-day and there are no overcast skies in sight, I look for open shade such as that created by the shadows of large buildings which can also effectively create great even light.

Some of my favorite light for portrait photography is soft window light. Some of my favorite photos have been taken inside using only soft window light such as the portraits below. Keep in mind that direct sunlight entering through a window should be avoided as it will create harsh shadows as with mid-day sunlight.

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the lovely wedding of (C & T) this past weekend. The simply beautiful ceremony was held in the backyard of the bride's parents' home and the reception at the River House at Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro. I had never been to Rood Bridge Park before and I must say it is absolutely gorgeous!

Focus of the Week - Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds - Photographic Composition
Portrait Photography

Composition has the potential to make or break a photo. One of the first rules I chose to master the understanding of in photography was the 'Rule of Thirds.' By using the rule of thirds, the visual interest of a photo is enhanced by placing the subject off-center.

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to break the photo down into thirds both horizontally and vertically so that you have nine squares. Your point of interest should be placed on the intersecting points of any two lines, or along the dividing lines.

In head and shoulder portraits, the eyes are the point of interest and therefore should be positioned on or near an intersection of two lines or along a dividing line.

In a three-quarter or full length portrait the face is the point of interest and should be positioned on or near an intersection of two lines or along a dividing line.

When taking photos as you're learning to use the rule of thirds keep in mind what the points of interest are in the shot and where you are placing them.

I have so many things to be thankful for...My wonderful family, friends, our home, our jobs...just to name a few.

I am most thankful for my sweet baby boy who we welcomed to the world in January who has been nothing but an absolute blessing...temper tantrums and all :) There is no greater blessing in my life than being a mother.

I am also truly blessed with an absolutely wonderful family and I am more thankful than ever for them because there is nothing better than knowing that my baby is surrounded by some of the most amazing people I know.

Congrats on the engagement I&E! This was my last session at Edgefield in October...The colors are just so so gorgeous this time of year! Miss I is the little sis of one of my close friends so when she asked me to be her photographer I was really honored to have the opportunity! It's always encouraging when people I know choose me to be their photographer; it makes me feel like I must be doing something right :) We got an early start and there was very little traffic at Edgefield which was wonderful! I was also thrilled to have little Miss B join us...She posed wonderfully all on her own with so much personality and confidence and she came up with some great ideas for a few shots as well...I might have to recruit her to model for me in the future :)

Edgefield was a very popular request for photos sessions in October, understandably since the fall colors are gorgeous, and I don't mind at all because Edgefield really is a wonderful location for photos. This couple had an even better reason for doing their engagement photos at Edgefield as they will be getting married there next year.

It is no secret that I am a dog lover so I was so exited to hear that A&M wanted to include their dogs for a photo or two. I have to say I just love that first photo below!!

Baby (M) just turned ONE! Kind of hard to believe...It seems like it was just yesterday and yet so long ago when we got to meet him for the first time when he was just days old. I lucked out with some great weather for my other October sessions but for this one it rained...hard...and it didn't stop. We found some cover and made the best of it. We couldn't reschedule because some of the members of this family were visiting from Hawaii...I'm a little jealous :-) One couple was newly engaged so we snuck in a few extra photos of the two of them. They were all such an absolute delight! I am pretty convinced I have the best clients ever!

Isn't she just lovely?! I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Miss C this past weekend at Edgefield. The weather was wonderful, the lighting was gorgeous, the location was perfect, and as you can see Miss C is stunning! Can you believe that hair!?

To add to the wonderfulness of this session Miss C is lucky enough to have a very talented sis-in-law, who is also my wonderful friend and an amazing hair stylist and a wonderful makeup artist as well. She joined us for this session so Miss C basically had her own personal stylist...which was awesome! I asked her if she could join me for all of my sessions...Seriously, we might have to work something out :-) I also know from personal experience that she really is an amazing hair stylist...so if you would like her info just let me know ;-)

I have been struggling for quite some time with determining what exactly I should do with my life. I've done what I was expected to do. I went to college and joined the corporate world. I have a good job, I work for a good company, and I am very thankful. I have no regrets and I am proud of my accompishments. But photography is truly my passion which I do not have the time to pursue to the extent that I would like to. I am tired of dropping my sweet baby off at daycare everyday; it's not fair that someone else gets to spend so much time with him (since he is the most precious thing on Earth:) while I am at work. I opened up a book that I had lying around the house tonight to a page with big bold print that said "Take Charge of Your Life" and in smaller print underneath I read "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." I think it's a sign.

He is already four months old...It's so fun watching him grow and learn but if I could push a rewind button and go back to day one, I would...I can't imagine how I am going to feel when he's 5, 10, or 18.

Being a parent makes me have a new appreciation for my own parents. I've always known I have absolutely wonderful parents but I never knew how much a parent could love a child and what a parent would do for their child until I had one of my own. I can only hope I will be as good of a parent as my parents were and still are to me...

Last Sunday was my first Mother's Day:) My husband arranged to have our little man's handprints imprinted in clay...So precious! He was such a good boy and so adorable! Love my little man so much...and my hubby too!

One of my very good friends had her first baby three months before I had mine...both are baby boys. Such good timing! This little guy is just precious...and quite stylish already as well :) I think he has his mommy to thank for that. We took a few with his cousin...They are the only two grandchildren on his mommy's side...Such a beautiful little girl as you can see and a wonderful big cousin :)

My husband and I welcomed our sweet baby boy into the world on January 30, 2010. We love him so much, more than words can say. This was a wedding that I traveled a bit to Eugene, OR for...and it was sooo worth it. First of all, I am in love with this property of the bride's uncle's...gorgeous. It literally poured all day and I was a bit concerned for the first time I have to say, but as soon as it was time for the ceremony to start the rain stopped...and everything was so beautiful! I have to add that the dog just melts my heart in these photos. Thanks you two for the wonderful opportunity! Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness...

I let my pups out this morning to the backyard just for a bit because it's been a rainy weekend so far in Portland and this is what Mr. Jaxon looked like when I let him in...Apparently he likes digging in the mud, it looks like he may have even been eating it...who knows??? Loved this session! Family reunion weekend...

Last weekend we went to my husband's family reunion in Seattle and it was a blast! It was really great to meet the cousins, aunts, and uncles that I had never really met before and they are all so wonderful! There were also a ton of absolutely adorable kids running around and one of the cutest, sweetest dogs that I have ever met in my life so I, of course, had my camera out snapping all kinds of photos of them...Here are a few that I thought I would share :)

A little weekend hike...

I drug my husband along to go on a little hike with our dogs over the weekend at a nearby sort of "hiking area." My husband was not so thrilled with the idea because it was quite chilly outside and he claimed that he had a cold which to him means that he should be glued to the couch all day playing some sort of silly video game or watching a movie...I do have to give him credit because he did go with me even though he wasn't thrilled about it. Anyways, here are a few photos that I took during our little adventure; as you can see there wasn't much scenery but I was just happy that I got to get out and about with my little family and take some photos along the way :)

You all might think that I am a little crazy by now because I keep posting photos of my dogs...I always take tons of photos of them but recently it's been pretty wet and very cold outside so I haven't been able to take photos of people so my dogs become my models :) Miya is very hard to get a good photo of, she basically runs when she sees my camera and she is quite hyper so she doesn't stay still for photos very well at all. My little Jaxon pup on the other hand is quite the little ham, he's much calmer than his sister and he's a pretty good poser :) Anyways, here are a few photos from over the weekend of my lovebug, Mr. Jaxon.

He sleeps like this a lot behind the curtain on his little rug next to the sliding glass door :) He will also just sit behind the curtain and look through it for 10 minutes or so, he's pretty silly sometimes but that's why I love the little guy:)

Well, here are some more cute kids that just happen to be relatives of mine...These are my husband's cousin's kids and not only are they adorable, but they are all so intelligent, so sweet, and they all have these great bold personalities; and even with all of their wonderful similarities they are all still so different from one another. The oldest two wanted action photos which was fun :) Anyways, such a fun photo shoot with four great kids...it doesn't get much better than that.
